Acne develops on the skin’s surface is covered in skin pores that connect to the sebaceous glands, beneath the skin.

The oil glands produce an oily liquid called sebum or oil that moisturizes the outer most layer of skin through follicle.

Low glycemic index foods :

Diet low in glycemic index showed evident result in controlling acne. Diet which releases sugar in blood stream ultimately increases insulin – like growth hormone in blood. IGF in turn increases the oil production from sweat glands resulting  in acne.

Some foods which increases the sugar levels in blood are :

Simple and refined sugar like cakes , pastries, pastas ,white rice, white sugar, maida , and other processed foods.

All the above foods can be replaced with whole grains, whole legumes, vegetables and whole fruits , green leafy vegetables , nuts and oilseeds.

Foods with high cholesterol

Animal food, dairy items contains cholesterol. Cholesterol might increase the sebum production and cause inflammation of the follilces causing acne.

A plant based food helps in maintaining alkaline body and helps in detoxification of blood and liver, hence helps in reducing acne production.
